Legislative Update -- June 26, 2025
June 26, 2025Thank you for urging your Congressmember on the Appropriations Committee to support federal funding for libraries in this year’s budget process!
It’s hard to tell yet how budget negotiations will play out, but we need to make sure that we keep up the drumbeat of support for libraries between now and Friday, July 18, the last “business day” before the House Appropriations Subcommittee focused on library services marks up their bill.
Now that you’ve used the action page, we’re asking you to go one step further and write a letter to the editor (LTE) to your local paper to urge your Congressmember to act for library funding this year. And ALA has everything you need to submit your own—read on!
Just for you, ALA has released a detailed toolkit on how to successfully submit a letter to the editor on funding libraries:
If Congress doesn’t continue funding for library programs next year, library services will be significantly curtailed, regardless of what happens with the Administration or in court when it comes to the Institute of Museum and Library Services. That’s why we need you to take action over the next few weeks—it’s vital for the future of our libraries.
Whether you’re at the beach or doing a staycation at home this summer, we hope you can spare a little time to do more direct advocacy in support of our libraries. We need Appropriations Committee members in both houses of Congress to hear consistently about the value of libraries, and we’re counting on you to help us make that happen.
