General Description: Organizes and implements all duties necessary to catalog library materials.  Supervises cataloging/processing duties performed by other library staff as assigned by Circulation & Technical Services Manager.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Copy catalog new materials, assigning appropriate call numbers.
  • Organize and supervise the processing of new library materials.
  • Utilize OCLC databases to aid in cataloging library materials.
  • Maintain the library’s bibliographic database.
  • Read professional literature to keep aware of trends in public libraries.
  • Attend relevant meetings and workshops as needed.
  • Due to the size of the library staff, all employees will be asked to help with day-to-day library tasks, as needed, including, but not limited to checking out materials for patrons and opening/closing the library.

Benefits: The Cataloger will receive health insurance benefits, two weeks of paid vacation and two paid personal days annually, one sick day per month, parental leave, and an employer contribution to IMRF (Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund). 

Requirements

  • An LTA is required. A combination of education and experience can be substituted in exceptional cases.
  • At least 2 years of library experience needed. The cataloger must have familiarity with library cataloging procedures and processes.
  • Experience with cataloging in RSA library is strongly preferred.
  • Must have knowledge of standard library procedures, including circulation practices and public service. The cataloger must have general computer skills.
  • Library employees must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 lbs. They must be able to reach high library shelves and bend, as needed. A stool can be used, if needed. They must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
