Introduction to Property Taxes for IL Libraries

January 17, 2019

ILA’s Public Policy Committee has heard from a number of libraries concerned that they are not receiving all the revenue due to the library from local property taxes. ILA takes very seriously the issue of tax revenues due to public libraries, and the Committee worked with ILA staff and the ILA legislative consultant to compile some information to help educate our members about these issues. Ultimately, it is essential to work with legal counsel, financial advisors, and boards who know a library's individual situation, given the differing ways public libraries are structured. While ILA cannot provide legal advice to its individual members, we hope the information here can shed some light on a complex issue. The ILA Intro to Property Taxes for IL Libraries is available on the ILA website.
