General Statement of Duties

Provides prompt and friendly service to customers of all ages at the Check-out Desk, assisting them with a variety of tasks relating to their use of library materials.

Tuesday: 3 – 7 pm
Thursday: 3 – 7 pm
Friday: 1 – 6 pm
Saturday: 8 am – 3 pm

Distinguishing Features of the Class

Under the supervision of the Access Services Manager, assists customers with checking out library materials and registering for library cards. Answers questions and solves problems for library customers in a friendly and efficient way. Assists with check-in, materials handling, and other tasks necessary to maintain efficiently the constant heavy flow of items through the department. Varied schedule includes daytime, evening and weekend shifts.

  • Utilizes Polaris effectively and efficiently
  • Issues library cards
  • Monitors the operation of the electronic automated materials handling equipment
  • Monitors the operation of and assists customers with self-check computers
  • Assist customers by telephone
  • Checks in and inspects library books and AV materials
  • Answers customer questions and concerns, such as overdue materials
  • Collects fees, when applicable
  • Promotes library programs with patrons
  • Answers directional and procedural questions
  • Participate in departmental and library-wide training and activities, including technology training
  • Performs other recurring tasks as assigned

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Customer service experience preferred
  • Friendly, positive attitude and a strong commitment to serving the public
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities


  • Ability to learn and perform routine library functions and procedures accurately and quickly
  • Ability to learn and use the computerized circulation system
  • Ability to learn operation of and troubleshoot automated materials handling equipment
  • Ability to learn and apply money collecting procedures
  • Strong commitment to public service
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Ability to work with library customers and staff in a friendly and efficient manner
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate policy to library customers
  • Accurate computer and keyboarding skills
  • Ability to maintain reliable attendance and regular schedule
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing situations and to vary work schedule
  • Good vision and hearing
  • Manual dexterity to operate computer and telephone equipment
  • Physical ability to regularly lift library materials weighing up to 40 lbs, and to push fully loaded carts of library materials
  • Satisfactory criminal background check
