Reference & Reader Services Librarian | Plainfield Public Library District

The Plainfield Public Library District is looking for a customer-service and technology-oriented librarian to join our staff. The successful candidate will be a team player with excellent communication and technology skills who enjoys teaching, working with the public and possesses a passion for reading. You must anticipate ongoing change, continually self-educate, take risks, be open to varying degrees of experimentation, learn from experience and have a sense of optimism. Applicants invited for interviews will be asked to demonstrate abilities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing reference, interlibrary loan, reader’s advisory services and collection development with a special focus on eBooks, fiction and audiobooks
  • Assisting and training others in the use of online resources, software, hardware, Internet, and other equipment available for public and staff use
  • Collaborating with technology training librarian on developing and presenting technology classes, including appropriate maker technologies, for the public and staff
  • Planning adult reading programs
  • Administering, designing content, maintaining and monitoring virtual reference, website and social media services in a synergic environment
  • Representing the Library on Pinnacle Library Cooperative committee for digital platforms
  • Creating marketing materials and patron training guides
  • Participating in professional development activities and continuing education opportunities to continually develop skills, abilities and knowledge

This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, including evenings and weekends.

Requirements include:

  • ALA/MLS degree
  • One year of experience and/or training in areas applicable to these responsibilities.
  • Passion for helping others and working with readers
  • Ability to demonstrate the use of a wide variety of software and hardware, including tablets and mobile devices
  • Can learn and adapt to new technologies quickly and efficiently
  • The ability to work with others in a team-oriented environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
  • Use of independent judgment, attention to detail and creativity in your work
  • Demonstrable instructional skills and/or experience
  • Access to a vehicle


Compensation begins at $45,510.00, plus IMRF and a comprehensive benefits package.
