Families and Children Working Group, Illinois Joining Forces
The many member organizations of this group offer a wide range of programs and services to Illinois members of the various armed services. They have developed a toolkit especially to help libraries build their collections and reach out to their communities.
Our Heroes Tree
Originally developed by the Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University, this project is currently administered by the Indiana State Library. It encourages library programming around Veteran’s Day and is a good way for libraries to kick off a veterans or military family initiative.
Pritzker Military Museum & Library Veterans Information Center
With hundreds of books, brochures, and other materials available in person and online, the Veterans Information Center at Chicago’s Pritzker Military Museum & Library is dedicated to addressing important issues affecting veterans and their families, both locally and around the world. In addition to these resources, the Museum & Library also hosts frequent programs and events focused on the military and veterans’ affairs.
Talking Service: A Reading and Discussion Program for Veterans
This reading and discussion program is designed for veterans, as well as their families, friends, service providers, and caregivers. The text developed especially for the program, Standing Down: From Warrior to Civilian, includes forty-four selections ranging from personal accounts of service in Iran and Afghanistan to fiction, poetry, and essays that speak to past experiences, concerns, and aspirations of those who have served and made the often-difficult transition back to civilian life.
