Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)

FOIA: A Balancing Act

The Illinois Library Association strongly supports the public's right to easily access government records and documents. The Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) provides a comprehensive basis in law requiring public bodies to make information available in a timely fashion, and also provides some exceptions. Some public bodies, including libraries, can find FOIA requests burdensome, due to limited staff and resources. ILA and other groups are working toward balanced FOIA regulation to promote access and recognize associated costs to taxpayers.
