ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Departmental Responsibilities

  • Hire, train, schedule, mentor, lead, supervise and evaluate the work of direct reports.
  • Provide excellent patron experiences by offering outstanding reference and reader/media advisory.
  • Oversee collection development and maintenance for all library materials intended for use by patrons ages thirteen (13) and older, including material selection & ordering, collection assessment, and weeding, while maintaining an assigned budget.
  • Collaborate with other departments and staff to ensure the relevance, quality, and effectiveness of library offerings to meet community needs, including the development of strong community partnerships and program content.
  • Act as the library’s volunteer coordinator for adults and teens, including leading a Teen Advisory Board.
  • Prepare statistics and reports as needed.
     

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director and Assistant Director in planning and developing policies, procedures, budgets, schedules, and long-range goals that reflect current library trends and meet local service and collection needs.
  • Assist the Director and other Department Heads with hiring, training, scheduling, mentoring, leading, supervising, and evaluating the work of library staff.
  • Attend Library Board and other administrative meetings as assigned.
     

General Responsibilities

  • Provide consistent, gracious, and friendly service to coworkers and patrons.            
  • Understand and enforce library policies and procedures while safeguarding confidential and restricted information.   
  • Participate in coverage of the Circulation, Reference, Children’s, or Computer Lab desks as needed.
  • Act as the Person in Charge of the building on a regular basis.
  • Assist with library public programs and outreach.
  • Includes evenings, weekends, and some mandatory workdays. 

And other duties as assigned by the Library Director.

Thurs: 12-8 pm
Fri: 9-5 pm
Saturday: 9-5 pm

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION

  • Strong leadership skills. Ability to set priorities, make independent decisions, and exercise discretion with patrons and staff.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong written and verbal skills; speaks clearly, demonstrates group presentation skills, and conducts productive meetings.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, working effectively with individuals of diverse cultures, communication styles, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • Proactive self-starter with strong analytical skills and problem solving-abilities; identifying and resolving problems efficiently; gathering and analyzing information objectively and thoroughly.
  • Ability to make timely decisions and de-escalate conflict; exhibit sound and accurate judgment; remain calm in difficult situations.
  • Knowledge of literature and popular interests for teens and adults including audiovisuals, computer and technological resources, and other materials that constitute a balanced collection and public program offerings.
  • Knowledge of current reference interview, readers’ advisory, bibliographic and reference services tools, techniques, and resources relevant to the age groups being served. 
     

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Must be within six (6) months of completing a Master of Library and Information Science degree (ALA accredited college/university).
  • 2-3 years of supervisory/management experience required.
  • Proficient in computer-based technology including but not limited to responsible use of social media, email, and Microsoft Windows and Office applications.
  • Customer service or library-related experience preferred.
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and/or Polish preferred.
