Legislative Update -- March 30, 2023

March 30, 2023

SB 2419 Passed the Senate
Senate Bill 2419, sponsored by Senator Lara Murphy (D-Des Plaines), creates the License to Read Act, which provides that the State Librarian may negotiate with publishers of ebooks and audiobooks on behalf of libraries. Additionally, it would establish a grant program to provide funds to libraries and library districts to pay for digital licenses. The bill will now head to the House for further deliberation.

Tomorrow is the deadline for bills that will advance. We should have more information to share next week.
