Information Services Librarian | Quincy Public Library

The Information Services Librarian is responsible for providing in person and virtual reference and research assistance to patrons. This position participates in collection development, and ensures interactive user engagement with the library’s digital content and online resources. Additionally, this position will help support library programs and community outreach.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES (these duties may be divided between librarians)

  • Responds to patron inquiries for information or assistance, including in person, telephone, mail and electronic requests.
  • Maintains library’s databases, pulls usage statistics, and performs searches.
  • Performs readers’ advisory service for patrons.
  • Formulates interlibrary loan subject and title requests.
  • Oversees and maintains the Illinois State Documents collection. Supervises and maintains organization of the Illinois Room vertical files. Selects articles from the Quincy Herald-Whig for addition to the Illinois Room vertical files.
  • Maintains the local and state history collection.
  • Maintains the microfiche and microfilm collection.
  • Maintains and updates the physical and digital photo archive.
  • Maintains and updates Quincy Area Architectural Database.
  • Prepares bibliographies.
  • Updates information on local, state, federal, and international government officials.
  • May serve as the library’s coordinator of online reference service.
  • Conducts group tours of the library.
  • Plans and presents community programs in collaboration with the Community Engagement Librarian and Information Services Manager including workshops on technology and electronic resources or local history/genealogy programming.
  • Orders, assigns subject headings to, and weeds the material in the vertical file.
  • Coordinates and participates in library sponsored adult book clubs.
  • Writes or assists with the writing and implementation of grants as needed.
  • Provide friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable customer service.
  • Assist and instruct patrons using virtual resources, downloading digital content, using publicly available technology including computers, printers, copiers, scanners, fax, etc.
  • Regularly work the service desk and provide reference and reader’s advisory assistance.
  • Participates in collection development, as assigned.


Master’s Degree required; Master’s Degree in Library Science or Information Science from an accredited library school preferred. Two years library experience preferred. Demonstrated computer experience required; knowledge of word processing, desktop publishing, and library software preferred. Proficiency with electronic resources and the ability to use library databases. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to multi-task. Ability to work well with others. Reliable and self-motivated. Ability to lift, push, carry, and/or pull moderate to heavy materials.

This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, with a varying schedule including days, evenings, and weekends.
