Administration & Human Resource Management

 Responsible for hiring, scheduling, supervising, training, evaluating and ongoing development of all staff.

 Implements library policies, recommends new policies and changes in existing policies.

 Oversees and evaluates the effectiveness of all aspects of day-to-day library operations (e.g. scheduling, collection development, patron services and materials processing).

 Responsible for library technology needs and implements new technology as appropriate, including the maintenance and updates to the website or network.

 Responsible for library collection development including overseeing selection, purchasing and weeding of all collections within budget according to the Selection policy.

 Provides for the development, repair, maintenance, safety and security of the library building, equipment, furnishings and grounds.

Customer Service & Community Relations

 Promotes friendly, efficient and knowledgeable customer service.

 Develops and sustains a public information program that effectively informs the community about library services and promotes a strong library presence.

 Establishes effective relationships with community leaders and officials, friends of the library, and other library partners (e.g. Richton Park Community Center, schools, VFW Post, etc.).

 Promotes cooperation with RAILS (Reaching Across Illinois Libraries System) and area libraries.

 Responsible for library’s public relations program.

Organizational Growth

 Develops the overall vision, common goals and objectives of the library, integrating the ideas of the public, Board of Trustees and staff.

 Stay abreast of new technologies and library trends through professional organizations and literature.

 Recommends and establishes new services and programs.

 Directs the preparation of library publicity and public relations programs.

 Attends system, local, state and national organizations, institutes and workshops for continuing library education as authorized by the Board.

Financial & Legal Management

 Develops and administers annual appropriation and working budgets.

 Prepares all legal and financial documents, including the budget and levy.

 Monitors and evaluates cost and adequacy of insurance coverage and services.

 Responsible for the annual report, grants, circulation statistics and other documents related to the management of the library.

 Consults with the auditor and attorney on matters pertaining to district assets.

 Ensures compliance with relevant federal, state and local laws and complies with requirements for good standing in regional and state library system.

Board of Trustee Relationship

 Organizes and attends monthly board meeting including creating the agenda, with the Board President, preparing the director’s report, financial and other reports as needed.

 Advises the board on issues from policymaking to budget preparation, inform the board about developments in the library field.

 Provides regular reports to the Board of Trustees about status of the library including resources, services and usage

 Carry out all other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Board.


 Master of Library Science Degree from an ALA accredited program with previous library director experience or five years minimum library management experience.

 Experience in supervising staff, knowledgeable of budget development and administration as well as experience with budgeting, finance, fundraising and grant writing.

 Possess excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to relate well to the public and library staff, have good organizational skills and embraces ‘out of the box’ thinking.

 Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other applicable technologies.


$60k to $74k based on experience
