Position Summary:

Plans, coordinates, directs and evaluates the overall operations of the Schiller Park Public Library in accordance with the bylaws, strategic plan, policies, and budget adopted by the Schiller Park Public Library Board of Trustees. Manages the work of Library personnel either directly or through subordinate supervisors. Performs other related work as required by the Library Board of Trustees.

The Executive Library Director is appointed by and reports to a seven member Board and provides internal and external guidance to ensure the highest quality of library services and promote the Library as an essential service to the community of Schiller Park.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Leads the operations of the Library, including by not limited to: reference, circulation, programs, volunteer utilization, community outreach and relations, and staff training and development.
  • Works with the Board and staff to plan and develop services to meet the library needs of the community.
  • Prepares annual budget and Levy for Board approval and monitors and approves expenditures as directed by the Library Board.
  • Coordinates meeting agenda items and materials and participates in Library Board meetings.
  • Approves and monitors expenditures from the operating budget. Prepares monthly treasurer's report for approval of the Library Board.
  • Submits recommendations on policies, services, and fiscal activities to the Board and develops procedures to implement policy decisions.
  • Provides professional expertise and guidance to the Board including but not limited to, presenting information on pertinent legislation from local, state, and federal agencies, discussing trends in library technology, funding, and management wherever possible.
  • Compiles and records library statistics for monthly Board meetings and annual reports.
  • Selects and maintains the collection of library materials that meets the needs of a diverse community.
  • Supervises maintenance of library building, equipment, and furnishings.
  • Conducts staff meetings and encourages continuing education and professional growth of staff members.
  • Stays abreast of current developments in the library field by attending workshops, professional meetings, conferences, and reading current literature.
  • Prepares grant requests and administers grant funds upon award.
  • Represents the Library, advises and consults with other libraries, village agencies, and community groups.
  • Directs Public Relations program to promote and publicize library services.
  • Maintains membership in professional organizations.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of library principles, practices, techniques, materials and technology in the field of library management and administration.
  • Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations relating to library operations.
  • Knowledge of organization, objectives, programs, and services for a public library and their relationship to community needs.
  • Knowledge of the latest technological advances in the library profession.
  • Ability to hire, train, supervise, discipline, and evaluate staff at all levels of experience.
  • Ability to address complex issues submitted by internal and external parties, develop solutions, and perform actions to resolve problems in an equitable and timely manner.
  • Ability to meet, communicate and work effectively with members of library staff, the Library Board of Trustees, officials of the Village of Schiller Park, professional and community organizations, and members of the general public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Commitment to the mission and philosophy of public library service.


A Master of Library Science degree is required from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university.

Five years of professional experience with increasing responsibilities performing library services and related activities including budgeting, planning, and evaluation of services.

Minimum three years of experience in a managerial or administrative capacity.

Position requires day, evening, and weekend hours.

Possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license with access to transportation to conduct library business.


$70,000 annually DOQ
