Instruction and Research Librarian, STEM | Lewis University

The Position

The Lewis University Library invites applications for an Instruction & Research Librarian, STEM, to provide specialized information, research resources and instruction to all students (on-campus and online) with a major focus on those involved in the STEM studies and the College of Nursing. The Instruction & Research Librarian is responsible for incorporating information literacy concepts, creating authentic library learning experiences (physical and online), and working with the university’s faculty and staff to articulate the Library’s impact on student success.

This role will require travel to all Lewis University satellite campuses; to provide seamless library resources for all University members as well as some night and/or weekend shifts (including overnight hours during “Super Study” programming). We seek creative candidates who can work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness in support of the Lewis University Mission.

Some Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support and promote the Library Vision, offering diverse and dynamic resources and collections to its learning community in the spirit of academic inquiry and civic engagement.
  • Act as liaison for the STEM related fields of study, the College of Nursing and specific academic departments including (but not limited to) Biological and Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Technology, health sciences and other departments as assigned.
  • Provide and promote specialized library instruction services to the students and faculty in areas connected to STEM studies, the College of Nursing, Aviation and Transportation and other departments as assigned.
  • Provide research services (responding to in-person, telephone, virtual and electronic inquiries) to all University Community members, with specialized research consultations for STEM studies, the College of Nursing, Aviation and Transportation and other departments as assigned.
  • Under the direction of the Head of Library Instruction and Research Services and the Library Director, and in conjunction with library staff, and the staff of other university units, assist in long-range planning of library services.
  • Under the direction of the Head of Library Instruction and Research Services and the Library Director, assist in the creation and implementation of library policies, procedures and workflow documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

One to three years of academic library experience. Recent graduates with an MLS/MLIS from ALA-accredited institution will also be considered. Intimate knowledge of existing resources and current trends in programs involving STEM (Biological and Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Technology) Aviation and health sciences areas of study. Strong interest in working with students, faculty and staff. Commitment to creating and providing user-centered library services, specifically regarding library instruction services. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills. Ability to work creatively, collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness in support of the Lewis University Mission. Ability to demonstrate flexibility to adapt to new technologies and change. Computer application knowledge and experience, a demonstrated high level of proficiency in various computer operating systems, the MSOffice Suite, assessment tools, etc. Demonstrated ability to lead complex projects.

Preferred Qualifications

Second Master’s degree in any of the following fields: STEM (Biological and Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Technology, etc.) or Aviation or health sciences areas of study. Experience with library assessment in an academic environment. Demonstrated ability to multitask, prioritize, and work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced work environment. Able to research emerging technologies for deployment of library services. Must be able to take initiative and see projects through independently. Ability to demonstrate flexibility to adapt to new technologies and change.
