Come join us at DePaul University! We are currently seeking a new addition to our Technical Services team to fill the position of Acquisitions & Serials Assistant.  

Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Acquisitions & E-Resources Librarian, the Acquisitions & Serials Assistant is responsible for resolving continuing resource subscription and claiming problems, providing copy cataloging and bibliographic and holding updates to records, and the binding of library materials in all formats.

Responsibilities & Duties

Serials Processing:

  • Resolve continuation, standing order, "serial-as-book" and serials subscription problems including the coordination of the serial subscription change workflow for title changes, cessations, cancellations, superseded editions, and new subscriptions, investigation of discrepancies in receipts or online records, transferring volumes to the Library's Offsite Shelving location and system, claiming outstanding serial or standing order volumes using vendor online systems to determine the status of shipments, handling returns and contacting vendors and publishers regarding problems.
  • Provide copy cataloging and holdings records and updates for continuations.
  • Work with others in the department to ensure accurate coverage holdings for all formats, including knowledge base holdings.

Binding:

  • Handle the preparation and receipt of library material binding and commercial/in-house repair including collation of issues and volumes to be bound, selecting the appropriate binding method, charging items to appropriate staff-use patron account(s), entering data into bindery vendor's online system (ABLE), sorting and packing books, checking returned shipments for errors, communicating with bindery representative concerning problems, and updating holdings information in online systems.
  • Hire, train and supervise student serials assistant to complete serials workflow duties, binding tasks, and department projects as assigned.

Statistics and Collection Management:

  • Compile statistics and other reports as requested by the Acquisitions & E-Resources Librarian. Participate in departmental collections management, cataloging/metadata and other special projects.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum 1 year experience working with serials in an academic library.
  • Experience with and willingness to work with automated systems, including OCLC, Voyager,and knowledge bases.

Preferred Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year experience working with integrated library systems and bibliographic utilities.

 Other Skills & Abilities 

  • Ability to follow procedures and policies.
  • Facility with learning new technology and systems, such as Alma/Primo VE, and with improving workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and resolve problems in continuing resources, cataloging and order records and to identify, interpret, and vet quality of bibliographic data and cataloging, especially serials cataloging, and other types of records.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of OCLC, I-Share, MARC formats, RDA, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and/or Dewey classification preferred.
