Columbia College Chicago is an urban institution of over 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students emphasizing arts, media, and communications in a liberal arts setting. The Library is currently seeking applications for the position of Catalog Assistant (POS 272).
Under the direction of the Senior Cataloger, the Catalog Assistant is responsible for the copy cataloging and classification of books (primarily English language), sound recordings, and scores acquired for the Library collection. The position is also responsible for the maintenance of records on the Library's Voyager system. A bachelor's degree is required for this position.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
* Performs copy cataloging, and on occasion derivative original cataloging, of books (primarily English language) using OCLC, Voyager, and Dewey Decimal Classification.
* Checks OCLC copy against item in hand, re-searching OCLC as necessary for different or updated copy.
* Shelf-lists to avoid duplication of classification numbers.
* Performs quality control and bibliographic maintenance in assigned subject areas to ensure accurate and consistent access within the library's online catalog; revises records, as necessary.
* Participates in departmental meetings and deliberations, assisting in the delineation of policies and procedures relating to cataloging.
* Participates in overall team effort and quality of service toward efficient operation of department and College.
* On occasion, assists with acquisitions activities, including searching for copy, creating online purchase orders and invoices, and receiving new materials.
* Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Prior library work experience, especially in the technical services
* Experience with integrated library systems (Voyager preferred) and a bibliographic utility (OCLC preferred) preferably in an academic setting
* A background in fine arts or a related humanities discipline
* An ability to work both cooperatively and independently
* Skilled at setting goals and managing various assignments simultaneously
* Knowledge of library classification systems, preferably Dewey Decimal Classification
* An understanding of basic MARC records and field elements
* A working knowledge of one or more Western European language and/or the ability to catalog in unfamiliar languages with the aid of a dictionary

Rye Free Reading Room – 125 years (and counting) of distinguished service to the community! The Board of Trustees of Rye Free Reading Room (founded in 1884) seeks an energetic, enthusiastic and experienced leader to continue its commitment to quality public library service for the Rye community. The Director will work closely with the 18-member Board of Directors, a 45-member Auxiliary Board, staff and local stakeholders to develop and articulate its vision for library service, design and implement strategic initiatives, and administer the service program, facility and space planning, and fundraising and resource development.
