Libraries Strengthen the Unity in Community
is the theme of this year's Illinois Library Association Annual Conference, which will be
held September 24-28, on Chicago's Navy Pier. More than 70 program sessions will
be held, exploring nearly every facet of library services - from building projects and
professional recruitment to storytelling and the latest revisions of AACR2.
I've been joking that the unofficial theme is "From Sarah to Sara - with a little Sylvia
in between!" I'm very excited that Sarah Long, former president of the American
Library Association and director of the North Suburban Library System, has agreed to
be the keynote speaker at this year's Opening General Session. Her presentation,
"Libraries: Now More Than Ever" will help us take stock of the events of the past year
and examine the roles libraries of all types play in their communities. Our conference
closes with Chicago's very own Sara Paretsky, the featured speaker at this year's
Illinois Authors' Luncheon. I know V. I. Warshawski's creator has a loyal following in
the library community and I hope you will be able to join me in welcoming her to ILA!
Of course, there will be a lot going on between Sarah and Sara! This year's Youth
Services Forum Author Breakfast will feature noted illustrator Steven Guarnaccia,
whose work will appear on the 2003 IREAD posters. ALA President Mitch Freedman
will discuss the pressing issue of library salaries and how they can be improved.
Al Gini, author of My Job, My Self will help us perform a job audit to augment what
we like about our work and ourselves. The Cultural and Racial Diversity Committee will
once again host a tour of library services to Chicago's ethnic communities. And that's
just a hint of what you can expect from this year's conference.
